Men’s Skincare: Healthy Skin Is Not Just a Cosmetic Concern

Men make up 50% of the population, yet skincare is still largely marketed towards women. Healthy skin, however, is not gender-specific.

Men’s skin has a different hormonal profile, particularly due to higher androgen levels. This can influence skin thickness, oil production, hair growth, acne and folliculitis. Regular shaving can also cause repeated minor trauma, irritation and disruption of the skin barrier.

Sun Damage and Photoageing

In Australia, one of the greatest threats to healthy skin is ultraviolet radiation. Repeated UV exposure causes DNA damage, oxidative stress and breakdown of collagen and elastin. Over time, this contributes to pigmentation, redness, wrinkles, loss of elasticity and, importantly, skin cancer.

Good skincare should therefore have three fundamental goals: keep the skin hydrated, maintain a healthy skin barrier and protect it from UV radiation and other environmental damage.

Beyond this, skincare should be individualised. Someone with oily, acne-prone skin has very different requirements from someone with sensitive, sun-damaged or ageing skin.

Skincare Designed for Your Skin

At SKEEN, we combine medical skin assessment with advanced technologies such as VISIA, which analyses features including pigmentation, redness, texture, pores and photodamage. VECTRA imaging can also be incorporated where appropriate for comprehensive skin surveillance.

Rather than simply recommending generic cosmetic products, we can use these findings together with careful medical assessment to develop a highly individualised skincare program.

Where appropriate, this can include Affinity personalised compounded skincare, with formulations selected specifically for your skin and its individual concerns.

Your skincare should not be based on guesswork. Understand your skin first, then give it what it actually needs.
